The Savvy Sleeper's Guide to Latex Mattresses
Ask anybody in the bedding industry, and you'll discover that latex mattresses are enormously popular today.
Why are so many people switching to latex? There are several reasons:
- Latex beds are among the most comfortable beds available. Latex cradles you from head to toe, and supports pressure points in a way that an innerspring mattress just can't do.
- Latex is durable. Latex mattress cores are famous for lasting through decades of use. They don't compress or pack down into body impressions. And they don't sag on the edges, even after years of sitting on the edge of your bed.
- Latex doesn't have the drawbacks of memory foam. Memory foam is hard until it draws enough of your body heat to relax. In a cold room, this can take quite a while. But latex is springy and consistently supportive as soon as you lay down. And unlike memory foam, latex doesn't sweat or give off odors that make you dizzy. Nor does latex slowly stiffen and harden over time, as most memory foams do.
Also, new laws require mattresses to be highly fire-resistant. Most manufacturers are now making mattresses with extremely toxic chemicals as fire retardants.
We choose to avoid these dangerous chemicals. We achieve the same fire resistance with a layer of fluffy organic wool in the outer coverings.
You'll get a bed that's not only safe, it's also breathable, dry (because the wool wicks away body moisture), and very comfortable.
How to Choose the Perfect Latex Mattress for You
First, make sure you're choosing pure latex. Latex can be natural (made from the sap of the rubber tree), synthetic (made from crude oil and toxic petrochemicals), or a "blended" mixture of both.
Synthetic latex is bad enough by itself, but it also gives off odors. To cover this up, most manufacturers use artificial vanillin, which is extremely nasty.
Note: Our mattresses are made from the only rubber cores that are 100 percent natural and have tested to be free of chemicals.
